Dear Gospel Artiste,

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world…Romans 12:2..

It is glaring that music of today’s world has vulgarity flowing in its blood stream. This can be seen by the too much cussing,advocacy for ill-behaviour and all sorts of immorality embedded in their lyrics. This, in turn, has had a ponderous effect on the youths. The devil understands that the hearts of youths are in sync with music,being who he is, he has ceased the opportunity of taking the center stage in music. The problem is and has being that gospel artists tend to borrow a leaf or two from this music. Today, one finds ingredients of these type of music in gospel songs and it leaves in the grasp of bewilderment; wondering what the problem really is. Romans 12 verse 2 has made it clear what Gods expects of gospel artist. God intends that the gospel artist should step out of the line,the line that everyone is standing in. Out,stand and be different. It is of great paramount that gospel artist gets to understand some basic facts and these facts should re-mould the thinking and make him or her act in accordance to God’s plans. The fact that gospel music is not a career but a call to ministry. This ministry is supposed to bring hearts in tune to God; it is to exalt and worship the name of Christ.

The New Living Translation brings out the message of Romans 12: 2, in simple and lucid manner. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world. This is a message for all Christians but for the intent of this piece, I have narrowed it to the gospel artists. Someone said the reason why gospel songs now sound vague,ordinary and seamlessly void of anointing is because a lot of gospel artists have in one way or the other conformed to the behaviour and customs of world. Instead of writing songs that would admonish God’s children and bring souls to Christ. They write songs to fit into the linen of the society; to get applauded and enjoy a life of luxury. Am I saying then, that gospel artists should not enjoy luxury? Let us flip through to Exodus 23: 25;

If you worship me, the Lord your God, I will bless you with food and water…(Goodnews).

Well, you can see that as a gospel artist God wants good things for you even more than you would want for yourself. So, instead of getting carried by the vain things of the world,trying to create music that is a prototype with what is obtainable out there,just focus on God and he would guide you. The other part of Romans 12: 2, affirms this,”but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

The message is simple; Out,Stand and be Different. It is sheer mockery to the kingdom to be called for service and one ends up behaving like one who is out to please the world. Mathew 5:14:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

As a gospel artists, it is criminal if musicians out there look at you and make mouths at you. Light ought to bring illumination,direction; set the pace. You are the light, set yourself aside and watch others craving to be like you. I know one would  say with all the things happening around,being different is easier said than done. Well, that is why we all need to depend wholely  and fully on God.

This is not written to judge you but to encourage you to do what is right and let the spirit of excellence be mirrored in you. I pray for grace for you and I,am,certain that no time the world would adjust to the pace you all would  set.
